In Victoria, kids are not encouraged to walk to school for a day - but the entire month of October!
And with school starting back on Monday, it's time to dust-off the walking shoes and get involved in VicHealth's fun, free and family-friendly activity to encourage children and parents to swap the road for the footpath and help build healthy habits for life.
Walk to School month is a way of encouraging children to increase their physical activity in an incidental way, with only one-in-five primary school children getting the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity each day.
"We hope that by participating in Walk to School children will be inspired to adopt a routine of walking year-round that can put them on the path to good health for the rest of their lives," says CEO of VicHealth, Jerril Rechter.
Last year, more than 30,000 students throughout Victoria joined Walk to School and covered more than 400,000 kilometres.
