With the June Long Weekend on the horizon, new research shows that more than three quarters of Aussies (77%) agree that money, or lack of it, is the number one reason they’re not booking regular weekend escapes. But according to TFE Hotels, who conducted the research, taking a break doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are seven tips to prove you can save on your next weekend away.

1.  Staycations

You don’t have to travel far to feel like you’re on a holiday.  As the old saying goes - “a change is as good as a holiday”.  Pack a bag, grab your kids and book yourself into a hotel nearby and simply enjoy your local area and its surroundings. It’s stress-free, with instant savings on petrol or flight costs not to mention time, with little planning required!  You might just stumble across something you didn’t even know was on your doorstep such as a new café or hidden picnic spots.

2.  Be in the know

Signing up to e-newsletters means you’ll be the first to know about the latest deals and promotions. Following accommodation providers on Facebook and Twitter can also see you reap the rewards of exclusive deals. For example, when signing-up to TFE Hotels eclub, subscribers instantly receive 10% off and also hear about prize giveaways.

3.  The best things in life are free

Being on a budget doesn’t mean you have to cut having fun when on holiday. Wherever you’re going for a weekend away, research ahead or grab the local newspaper when you arrive to sound out all the low cost or free activities on offer. The possibilities are often endless - bushwalking, picnics, tennis, kite flying, days at the beach, and fishing are just some examples.

4.  Timing is everything

Travelling during peak season can often mean paying a premium. If you’re looking to save dollars, travel outside of popular periods like school or Christmas holidays and research to make sure there are no popular events taking place over that time. Being prepared to travel in shoulder seasons can certainly pay off. For instance, winter is a great time to turn a drab weekend into something fun and affordable.

5.  Stay in a serviced apartment

Not only do you enjoy a ‘home away from home’ experience, apartments are often more affordable than hotel accommodation, especially for families. Having the luxury of a kitchen means you can also have a few meals in, which can translate into huge savings.

6.  Location, location, location

If you book a hotel in a central location you can save money on taxis and opt for cheaper public transport options or you can choose to walk.

7.  Winners are Grinners

Lastly, if budgets are really tight and there is no holiday for you in sight, start entering competitions to win one! To get you started head to www.tfehotels.com/greatweekends where you could be in the running to win one of 52 weekend giveaways, including flights and accommodation, as well as the ultimate prize – a holiday escape for you and 11 friends!
