Kid talk boring:

"Chitchat about one's kids is rarely stimulating dinner conversation," says travel author Dominic Dunne.

According to a new travel book by journalist, former Qantas employee and Australian diplomat, women talking about their kids are a little bit boring. Well, at least Cate Blanchett is.

That’s what Sydney-based Dominic Dunne says in his new travel book, Adventures of a Compulsive Traveller.

Mr Dunne, who’s travelled to more than 60 countries – which means he probably has quite a lot of money and not many children – takes a look at his life, travel experiences and adventures and gives a few travel tips along the way.

He recounts dinner with Cate Blanchett in New York (at an after-performance event). Across the table she was everything he thought she'd be: "pretty, poised and luminously pale".

"And as she droned on about her domestic duties, well, just a little boring," Dunne writes in the chapter headed ‘Cate does Hedda USA’.

"I wasn't expecting her to tell me how much she hated that bitch Gwyneth for stealing her best actress Oscar, but chitchat about one's kids is rarely stimulating dinner conversation," he writes.

There’s more name dropping. With such privileged jobs, he’s had the opportunity to meet people such as Hillary Clinton, Nana Mouskouri and the bestselling author and investigative journalist with the same name (but different spelling), the late Dominick Dunne.

Adventures of a Compulsive Traveller is a collection of stories that is both a travel narrative and a memoir. The book is categorised as "travel" since most of the content relates to trips, but there are also reminiscences and anecdotes from life generally.

Dunne’s philosophy is that life is a journey, not a destination. An amusing read, yes. But 'boring' mums may not just have the time!
