Caravanning Queensland together with Top Parks are aiming to break the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS® title with the world’s Largest caravan built from LEGO® bricks at the 50th Queensland Caravan, Camping & Touring Supershow in Brisbane on Wednesday, June 6.
The project was constructed on the Gold Coast over 10 weeks, taking more than 500 man hours and over 280,000 individual LEGO bricks.
Built by a team of up to 16 adult fans of LEGO (AFOLs) from across Queensland and interstate, the caravan measures 2.2m tall by five meters long and the 700kg of LEGO bricks are held together by 70 L of glue.
Caravanning Queensland General Manager Jason Plant said the full size caravan built from LEGO bricks is modelled off and sits on an original 1973 Viscount Royal chassis, Australia’s largest caravan manufacturer at the time.
“The caravan is fully equipped with a double bed, wardrobe, sink, stove, refrigerator, dinette, cupboards with sliding drawers and other features typical of a 1970’s caravan all made out of LEGO bricks,” Mr Plant said.
“It’s been amazing to see the design, planning and building phase all come together. We can’t believe it’s actually happened!”
The caravan aims to outdo the current GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title holder, which was based on a ‘teardrop’ style caravan unveiled at the Motorhome and Caravan Show in Birmingham in 2015 after 12 weeks of construction and made from 215,158 individual LEGO bricks.
Head of Top Parks David Smith said that as Australia’s largest network of independent parks, the company had thrown its support behind the project.
“Top Parks is all about fun, freedom and embracing the best experiences this country has to offer, and a trip in this caravan would certainly add a new dimension to any holiday,” said Mr Smith.
“Over the coming months we hope to see the caravan hit the road, visiting key destinations in our extensive network of parks. It’s fair to say it will turn some heads, and we hope it will also inspire people to make their own dream holidays a reality – no matter how ambitious they may be!”
The LEGO bricks were sourced from local, interstate and overseas suppliers with the team of builders setting up construction on the Gold Coast.
Avid caravanner and head Brick Builder, Ben Craig, said he has loved LEGO for as long as he can remember and as a child, often dreamed of what it would be like to build a habitable space out of LEGO bricks.
“I’ve worked on a few largescale builds over the years but nothing involving more than 25,000 bricks or larger than two meters in length so to move to a project of this size has been very exciting,” he said.
