Australia’s mums have a new way to make a difference for the world’s poorest children through an exciting new program from global children’s development organisation Plan International Australia.

Mums For Change asks Australian mums to get together with their mothers’ groups and learn about the impact they can have on a child and their community through child sponsorship.

The program also gives mums the chance to win great prizes, including $10,000 worth of travel vouchers, that can be used to visit the sponsored child.

“We are looking for mothers who would really love to make a difference in a child’s world,” Plan Australia Donor Relations Manager Sani Dowa said.

“Mothers are the core nurturers in our society and many already meet with other mums to share and provide much-needed support to one another.

“Through Mums For Change, Australian mums can extend that same support to children and families who might not have the same opportunities and networks that we do.

“Many mothers in developing countries are busy just dealing with daily survival – working in the fields, cooking the food, collecting the water and so on,” she said.

“There’s no time for creating support groups. Mums For Change is a great way for Australian mums to provide some of that support, even if it’s from a distance.”

Mums For Change invites mothers’ groups to trial child sponsorship for three months. During that time they receive a starter pack that will help them to understand how sponsorship works, introduce the child and their family, and explain the issues that the child’s community is facing.

“It’s a no-commitment period that is a fantastic opportunity for mothers’ groups to learn about the work that Plan does and the impact that it’s having on a child, their family and their community,” said Mrs Dowa.

If the group decides to continue the sponsorship, they will commit to sharing the $43 monthly contribution. Through regular updates and the exchange of pictures and letters with the sponsored child, the group will witness how their contributions provide essentials such as adequate nutrition, water and sanitation, healthcare, education and family income.

Mums For Change is being offered by Plan International Australia in partnership with Vibe Village, who have provided the major prize of $10,000 in travel vouchers. To be eligible for the prize, mums simply have to share the experience of sponsoring a child with their family and friends.
