It’s that time of the year where Aussies step out of a dark winter and embrace all that the sun has to offer by gathering with friends and family and, in true Aussie style, crack open a few beers.
In an effort to reduce wastage over the long weekend, Helpling, the online cleaning platform, has provided us with great ways to ensure that half empty, warm or flat beers don’t go unused.
Beer shampoo
Don’t get upset when someone pours beer all over you while celebrating a goal - you should instead thank them for helping you hair shine and adding volume. Yes, you’ve heard correctly, beer is in fact a fantastic alternative to shampoo. All you need to do is rinse the beer out of your hair thoroughly and you’ll see the difference immediately. For the perfect mix, add a cup of beer and quarter of a cup of lukewarm water together, tipping over the hair and rinsing.
Stain remover
We’ve all heard that white wine can help remove red wine stains but did you know beer has the same effect! When this get a little rowdy don’t worry about the carpets, just pour some beer on the stain, let this sit for 10 minutes and then dab with a sponge.
De-greasing agent
Whether it’s pots, taps or jewellery, beer can be used as a polishing substance and can clean up those stainless steal appliances around the kitchen and bathroom. The bubbles in beer help break down the grease and leave you with a shine good enough to see a perfect reflection
- Hint: When polishing jewellery leave the gold items soaking overnight in a cup of beer, rinse the next morning and polish with a dry cloth.
Footbath
Kick back, relax and enjoy a beer footbath. The bubbles in beer actively soften the skin, leaving your feet smooth. The best way to do this is mix half a cup of beer with half a bucket of warm water, soak your feet for 15-20, rinse, dry and apply moisturiser.
Furniture polish
Certain wooden tables and chairs really benefit from beer, particularly anything made with oak. Simply use a microfiber cloth to wipe over the wooden services.
- Hint: Don’t use a dark beer for this, the lighter the better!
Plant care
Empty beer bottles are great for taking care of your plants when you’re away from home. Fill an empty beer bottle with water and block with a cork. Then get a sewing needle or toothpick and poke 2-3 holes in the cork. Place the bottle upside down in the pot plant and it will slowly water itself while you are away.
