MONA is the Museum of Old and New Art located upstream on the Derwent River, about 25 minutes by fast ferry from the centre of Hobart.
Old and New Art doesn’t sound that exciting and I wasn’t sure about going but I was visiting Hobart with my sister, brother-in-law and their 18-month-old twins and we thought we should go. We are so glad we did.
All I can say, is if you are in doubt about visiting MONA, don't think twice, it is AMAZING!
It was one of the highlights of our trip, starting with the quick trip on the fast ferry from Constitution Dock. The staff were friendly and lively. In the ‘Posh Pit’ (which costs extra), we were immediately offered a sparkling wine from the Moorilla Winery (which is part of MONA) or a Moo Brew beer, and were served canapés – about two each for the three adults.
The building itself it worth seeing and the way it is set out is great, and there’s plenty to see and explore outside before even going inside.
There was something for everyone inside and amongst our group we liked and disliked different things. But that was okay, as that’s how a museum should be. The art is engaging and interesting and there was plenty even to occupy the two toddlers – they loved it also.
There were children of all ages there, and there is also information on which exhibits have an ‘O’ rating – that is, containing material not suitable for under 15 years.
I have been to a few art galleries in Australia and overseas and MONA rates very well in comparison. Do yourself a favour - don't miss out if you are in Hobart. MONA is a must!
Five stars.
