Tony Abbott’s red budgy smugglers will have a posse of pink rivals next weekend – and on his home turf at Manly Beach (Sydney) too!
A group of 78 13-30 year olds, known as Babewatch will take part in the annual ocean swimming Cole Classic to help raise $40,000 for CanTeen.
Babewatchwas established with the dual aim of getting more young people involved in ocean swimming as well as fundraising, according to Committee Member, James Goswell.
James says they're noticeable because of their bright pink budgy smugglers.
“We're willing to put ourselves out there to make a noise for a cause we all feel strongly about,” says James.
“It's so exciting to be involved in a team full of young people, our youngest member is 13, and they are all aware of the importance of helping and supporting those who need it.
“This year we wanted to help young Aussies who are living with cancer,” says James.
“We're lucky to be fit, on the beach, and cancer free, so it's fantastic to know that all of our efforts are going towards helping young people in need. We just swim a few kilometres in the ocean, but those who we're supporting are taking on a much bigger challenge that we can’t even fathom.”
Ambassador for the team is Bondi Rescue’s Trent ‘Maxi’ Maxwell, who will take part in the Cole Classic on Sunday 3rd February – also resplendent in pink budgy smugglers.
“I am really looking forward to swimming alongside Babewatch Members in the Cole Classic,” says Maxi.
“It’s great to see more young people involved in ocean swimming and the awareness Babewatch are creating about CanTeen is awesome. Young people raising funds to support young people living with cancer is a fantastic initiative.”
Cancer is the leading killer of young people, with about 1,000 15-25 year olds diagnosed with the disease. CanTeen supports, develops and empowers young people aged 12-24 years who have cancer, have a parent or sibling with cancer, or if a parent or sibling has died from cancer.
