Melbourne woman Binti Singh endured a problematic and difficult pregnancy before giving birth to a healthy baby boy at St Vincent’s Private Hospital.
Binti says it was the support of her midwives that gave her the strength to pull through.
“In November 2011, I had to go into hospital for four months of strict bed rest due to a complication with my pregnancy.”
“When I first came in I was quite distraught. Scans showed that I had an incompetent cervix, which means that the cervix can’t hold the weight of a growing baby. The length of a normal cervix is 4cm and mine was 1cm.”
Binti’s Obstetrician, Dr Nick lolatigis said that although surgery always has its risks, Binti almost certainly would have lost her baby if he had not made that decision.
“Binti was suffering fluid loss, so she was put under a general anesthetic and astitch was used to reinforce the cervix and keep it closed,” said Dr lolatigis.
“It is quite a rare complication, and often one that is identified in retrospect.”
Binti said that during her months at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Melbourne, the staff became like a second family to her.
“They offered an incredible amount of warmth and support. I can’t speak highly enough of them.”
“For the first 30 weeks I was very stressed. The pastoral services provided me with spiritual counselling. To comfort me they would tell me success stories of mothers who had been in a similar situation, which helped to ease my anxiety.”
“I was able to get to know the staff and form relationships with each of them. They were all so kind, attentive and clearly good at what they do.”
“I am so pleased to have a happy healthy child and I feel indebted to the wonderful staff at St Vincent’s Private,” Binti said.
