Pierce Brosnan's 41-year-old daughter has died from ovarian cancer, 22 years after the same disease killed her mother, Australian actress Cassandra Harris.

Charlotte Brosnan died last Friday, aged 41. She was diagnosed three years ago.

"On June 28 at 2pm my darling daughter Charlotte Emily passed on to eternal life, having succumbed to ovarian cancer. She was surrounded by her husband Alex, her children Isabella and Lucas and her brothers Christopher and Sean," Pierce Brosnan said in a statement.

"Charlotte fought her cancer with grace and humanity, courage and dignity. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our beautiful dear girl. We pray for her and that the cure for this wretched disease will be close at hand soon. We thank everyone for their heartfelt condolences."

Brosnan married Harris in 1980, and adopted Charlotte and her brother Christopher after their father's death in 1986.

Brosnan and Harris also went on to have a son together, named Sean.

The actor is now married to journalist Keely Shaye Smith, with whom he has two boys, Dylan, 16, and Paris, 12.

Experts such as A/Professor Deborah Marsh from the Kolling Institute and Ovarian Cancer Australia say that the symptoms that are reported most frequently are:

  • abdominal or pelvic pain
  • increased abdominal size or persistent abdominal bleeding
  • needing to urinate more frequently or urgently
  • feeling full even after eating a small amount of food.

If you have any of these symptoms, and if they are new and you have experienced them multiple times during a four week timeframe, then download Ovarian Cancer Australia’s Symptom Diary. It helps to monitor symptoms, and gives you a written record to take to your doctor to assist with diagnosis.

If you wish to discuss your symptoms or the support services available from Ovarian Cancer Australia, call 1300 660 334.
