How to Get Back to Work After An Extended Break:Get Back Into the Swing of Things Without Hassle!
Date: April 01 2016
There can be many reasons why people take an extended break from the workforce; travelling, bringing up a family and caring for someone are just a few. The problem is that when it’s time to re-join the workforce it can be difficult to get back into the swing of things. The world moves on and lots of things have probably changed in the job you once knew so well.
This does not make it impossible to get back to work; it just means it can be a challenge. But think of the sense of accomplishment when you do find a new job, and join the world of work again. One of the most important parts of getting back to work can be making sure you have the right up to date training for the role you are seeking. There are plenty of online training providers such as Upskilled that can help you to do this while still giving you plenty of time to continue your job search. We are going to take a look at why getting the right training is so important and what other things you need to think about to help you get back to work.
Asses your current position
Before you start making any plans for getting back to work you need to figure out where you stand; is your résumé still pretty relevant or is it obsolete, do you have fairly up to date skills or do you need a complete overhaul of your knowledge, how well do you know the job market? All of these things are very important to consider; once you know your current position then you can plan for the work you need to do. Chances are that if you have only been away from the job market for a short space of time you will not have a lot of work to do. On the other hand, if you have been away for years you may have to work hard to get up to date.
Study to improve you skills
If you discover that your skills need improving then you will need to study. If you have a busy life then choosing to study online can be a great option. It can also be less daunting than going back to college and studying with a group of people who may be much younger than you. The good news is that there is a wide range of online courses available so you should be able to find one with a syllabus that suits your needs.
Try something different
Just because you are going back to work that does not mean you have to return to the same career. If you have been away from your job for a while then you may feel like it is a good opportunity to try something completely new. If you have discovered that you skills are out of date then you are going to have to do some studying anyway; why not take the plunge and start down a different path?
It can be a scary trying to get back into the job market after being away, but if you take time to examine your position, and take action to update your skills or learn new ones, then you should be well on the way to securing that job you want.
