Queensland's Burleigh Heads has been named Australia's best beach by TripAdvisor.

Known for its surf break, Burleigh Heads was listed as number one, followed by NSW's Byron Bay and Coolangatta and Broome in WA.

In all, Queensland laid claim to six of the top 10, with NSW and WA taking two winning destinations apiece.

The TripAdvisor 2012 Travellers Choice Beach Destination Awards were based on reviews by travellers in TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel site.
