Bedroom Furniture: The Quality Factor in the Light of Raising a Child:Tailoring your bedroom according to the new circumstances
Date: April 29 2016
Everything changes once you become a parent. Some say that one chapter of your life closes whilst a new one begins. One thing is for sure – your relationship with everything that does not offer utmost comfort for your bone-tired body and functionality for your now multidimensional mind, is no longer important. In the midst of my attempt to synchronize mine and my husband's needs with the neverending list of demands that our little one silently (or not so silently) makes, I became all too much aware of the all crucial ingredients of the parenting cake.
One thing became crystal clear right from the start – we must part with the old futon bed. After realising that neck and shoulder pain and overall muscle tension are inevitable by-products of raising a child, we decided that it was about time that we tailored our bedroom according to our new circumstances.
Much Ado About the bed
I still remember every detail from the day we decided to get rid of the bedroom furniture that wasn't family friendly and about to fall apart, before we ourselves started falling apart. That was the momentwhen I realised: I want my bed like I want my coffee – strong, energising and preferably black. My husband laughed and said: “you feel things too deeply.” Well, he wasn't far from the truth, since I had been feeling the pain in my body all too deeply alright. A high quality bed became a must, not a mere want – the most central and arguably most important piece when it comes to bedroom furniture. Start with the bed and create a welcoming place where you can peel your tiresome layers off.
Matte Polish
Choosing a bed with a sleek matte surface will not only ensure a modern and stylish look, but it will also allow you to clean it easily. Since we all become much more bacteria-aware as parents, it’s nice to choose a bed surface that can be wiped clean in the blink of an eye. Plus, if you choose a darker shade (like I did), it’ll naturally look clean, even if it isn’t.
Mattress
Due to my relentless wish to keep microbes at bay, we bought a memory foam mattress that is in fact inherently resistant to irritants. Another great thing about these type of mattresses is that the surface moulds itself to the sleeper. It responds to your heat and pressure. I love my memory foam mattress with every fibre of my being. Only when the mattress responds so well to your position of your body can the sleep become a true exercise in relaxation.
Posture Slat System
Yet another discovery of mine, something that might be even more important than the mattress itself – is a system that ensures strength and stability of both the mattress and the bed. The slat system is located right underneath the mattress and it gives you a unique opportunity to make the best of your bed. Just by moving the bands across the slat you can customise the firmness or the softness of your mattress. This translates to perfection in my mind, since my husband and I have different definitions regarding the most comfortable sleeping environment. With this innovative system, one partner no longer has to adapt to the preferences of the other – each one can adjust their half of the bed to what’s most suitable for them.
Bed Frame
In the land of good sleep, the bed frame is yet another essential titbit. Beyond its aesthetic function, it really has to be sturdy enough, since while your little one depends on you for every single moment of the day, you become dependant on your bed for ultimate stability. In the spirit of that need, we decided to buy a bed frame that features centre support legs (the height of which can be adjusted).
Tallboy
Last but not least, in addition to everything I listed above, the tallboy we got for our bedroom truly set new standards for the phrase “when functionality meets style.” I like to call it my 5S saviour: sleek, sturdy, smooth, spacious, and stunning. It looks like a minimalist bedside table, only taller. It does not take up too much space all while its five drawers allow you to have everything you need within close reach. The anti topple strap is a great addition for risk-averse mummies such as myself. Possibly the most surprising part (or the cherry on top) is that I haven't heard a smoother drawer operation in my entire life! This comes as such a great added piece of mind since you can open and close your tallboy drawers as much as you want without waking up your baby.
Hopefully, this article will be of great help to all of you looking to transform your nest to fit your baby’s needs and your own.
