5 Things I Learnt When Breastfeeding Ted:Things I wish I knew when I breastfed for the first time
Date: June 24 2016
Less than a month away from welcoming her second baby, Lisa Wipfli is cool, calm and collected! That’s because she’s been through it all with her adorable son Ted less than two years ago. But this time, the wife of radio-host Michael ‘Wippa’ is less concerned about the labour as she is with those tricky first few months with the little one. Now, with experience under her belt, Lisa’s sharing her top five tips with us.
Breastfeeding pre-search
The first time around, I wish I was armed with a bit more knowledge before our little man Ted graced us with his presence. I would have read less about the labour and having a birth plan (which went completely out the window) and more about breastfeeding and coping with a newborn.
Multivitamins for peace of mind
I started taking Elevit from the moment Mike and I decided to start trying for our first baby – that was over two years ago. Given that I now know the full impact that a new born takes on your body and your health and wellbeing, I’ll now be taking their new breastfeeding-specific multivitamin, Elevit Breastfeeding, when my second child is born. It gives me confidence that I am getting the essential vitamins, minerals and Omega 3 for my baby’s healthy development and my own wellbeing, too.
Mum’s best friend
Breastfeeding doesn’t come easy to every mum and there are so many things to assist with the problems that a mum may face. Simple things like; drinking lots of water, relaxing, lactation consultants… night nurses, special breastfeeding pillows, massage therapists that do home visits, breast pumps, nipple caps… and special teas can all work wonders.
Don’t do it alone
Have coffee catch ups or phone chats with your close friends who are already mothers. Not only are they great for comfort – but for sharing their invaluable first-hand knowledge and experiences, too. Ask for the services they used, and have the names of those products in a safe place, ready to use if you do need them.
Treat yourself, too!
This time I’ll prioritise sleeping during the day when I can and not worry as much about the laundry and the house being clean. I think I will sign up to one of those healthy food deliveries so I’m not always making a last minute food decision! If I am fit and healthy, then my baby will benefit and I will be able to breastfeed longer and enjoy every moment more.
Always read the label. Use only as directed.
