You know we're heading into the home stretch of the year when the Melbourne Cup is in sight. It's probably not a good time to remind you that it's only 43 days to Christmas because there's so much to do this week already - and so little time. Here are our highlights for 4th - 10th November.
1. It’s the ‘F’ word: fashion, fascinators and Fiorente
Even if you’re not into racing, you would be hard-pressed not to know that the Melbourne Cup is on tomorrow. But that’s not all. On Thursday there’s Oaks Day and next Saturday is Stakes Day.
So much fashion, so many fascinators.
We’ve got three tips:
1. Plan your day. If you’re going to drink, don’t drive. Work out the transport beforehand and stick to it.
2. If you haven’t worked out what to wear yet, you could be leaving it a little late to figure it out – but don’t ignore the numerous OpShops and second-hand clothing stores around. Why spend a fortune on something you’ll wear for a few hours at most?
3. We’re sticking with our tip of Fiorente, ridden by Damien Oliver and trained by Gai Waterhouse. And if there’s one day of the year where it’s okay to have a little bet, Melbourne Cup Day is it: try Luxbet – it’s the only Australian-owned online betting agency.
2. NYE13
Want a front row seat to Sydney’s New Year’s Eve fireworks?
NSW Roads and Maritime Services is offering 1,700 family passes, each one for five people to one of the best vantage points - the Cahill Expressway above Circular Quay.
“Millions of people tune in to the fireworks if they can’t get to the city but this is the opportunity for people to win tickets and a front row seat to enjoy the celebration first hand,” a Roads and Maritime spokesperson said.
People can enter their household in the online draw on the Roads and Maritime website for either the 9pm or midnight fireworks.
The Cahill Expressway is a specially designated family area and entry is by ticket only. Entries close at 11.59pm Sunday 10 November and are restricted to one entry per household. You must be a NSW resident to enter. For terms and conditions please visit the Roads and Maritime website.

3. Be a Mo Sista this Movember
It’s Movember, the month when the men in our life – partner, brother, son, nephew, work colleagues – are encouraged to grown a mo to help raise funds towards prostate and testicular cancer programs and research.
But behind every great man is a woman and the Movember organisers recognise that it’s often a ‘Mo Sista’ who is the driving force behind a man not only taking part in Movember but taking that all-important check-up with the doctor.
A Mo Sista is essentially a woman who loves a Mo. An individual that is dedicated to supporting the Mo Bros in her life.
A Mo Sista can show support in a number of ways, from donating to the Mo Bro in their life, through to starting a team of moustache merchants. The ideas include:
- registering as a Mo Sista to start or join a team family and friends
- raising funds for your team through social networking platforms, workplace email or the Movember app for smart phones
- joining one of the legendary Movember Gala Partés
- participating in a MOVE event, and/or
- ordering health materials from Movember.com for the men in your life.
