The minute you walked in the joint ...:

First impressions count in your home, just as they do with people.

entrance

While we all know beauty is more than skin deep, first impressions count – and none more so than when people walk through your front door. The space may be small, but it should still have an impact.

Here’s 5 top tips for making the most of what you’ve got.

1.  Experiment with colour. An easy, inexpensive way to change up your entryway's décor is to paint one wall a different colour or shade. Try a fun new colour on the wall where people focus as they walk-in, the wall directly in sight when entering the door. You can go low by going two shades darker on the same paint as the rest of your walls. The colours will flow without jarring the eye. Alternatively, use a fun colour in three distinct places within the entrance.

2.  Any furniture should be highly functional. One of the most useful pieces of furniture you can have in an entrance is small chest or a table with drawers because they provide closed storage for keys, scarves, dog leashes – all those things that don’t really belong anywhere else. If you’ve got space, put a chair on either side because it just looks welcoming and can be convenient.

3.  Double your space! Accessorise with a mirror. It doubles the space, reflects the light and you can get so many different shapes, sizes and designs to express some individuality while being functional.

4.  Be practical and artistic. This is a variation on the second suggestion – but have a box which is both a point of interest and somewhere to store things.

5.  Let there be light. Light is a wonderful thing. The size of your entrance will dictate the type of light but make sure it is an area that can be prominently lit and that it is in keeping with the rest of your house. For example, if it's a small space, use recessed or down lights. If it's large and spacious, a chandelier might work.
