We try: the Dirt Devil:

Kirsten finds a vacuum cleaner that "really sucks" - in the way a vacuum cleaner should!

I hadn’t heard of Dirt Devil until I walked into a well-known national chain of hardware stores on the weekend looking for something else entirely. I accidentally walked down the aisle where they had the vacuum cleaners and – needing one – I stopped and looked at them. No sooner had I done so when I was joined by a staff member who was patient and helpful in answering my questions.

I admit I was attracted to Dirt Devil in the first instance because of the name. And then by its colour (bright red) followed by its cool, bagless look.

The salesperson assured me it was a “really good buy” and, although I have to work many hours to make $170, I thought for an apartment the size that I live in, nothing too much could be wrong.

In three words – and I never thought I’d say this about a vacuum cleaner – I love it!

It’s compact, light, user-friendly and has a 5m cord which means I can do my whole apartment from just one power point.

Best of all, it really sucks!

It’s bagless – which I didn’t understand to begin with – but that means it’s also ‘cleaner’ to use in terms of trapping dirt, dust and pollen. You can just tip away what it collects with the touch of a button, in my case straight into a chute in our apartment block especially for rubbish of this type. It’s very easy to empty and then click back into place.

Because it’s compact, it also stores easily when space is limited as it is for me.

It comes with some accessories for special places.

Dirt Devil make other types of vacuum cleaners including upright, cordless, the very cool robotic ones, bagged and hand-held. I didn’t look at the alternatives in their range as the one I purchased was so right in terms of price, size, weight and compactness.

I am delighted with the purchase. Five stars.
