We try: Scanpan classic cookware set:

They say 'everything works together in harmony' with Scanpan. But that's not what Penny found.

Last year, I was given some Scanpan products, comprising three saucepans and a fry pan. It was precisely what I wanted. I had heard and read so much about Scanpan over the years and I admit I have coveted them for some time.

The saucepans are good. They are easy to clean, the ergonomic handle is perfect for me and they are quite light. The only drawback here is the large saucepan (or Dutch oven), where the handles get very hot, even when over a cooktop, so you have to be careful when lifting it off.

However, the big disappointment for me is the frypan. All the publicity I had read about them was that the ‘classic’ Scanpan frypan was easy to keep clean.

I have to disagree. I have followed every instruction to the letter. So much so, that I insisted on washing the thing myself for the first two months or so – I didn’t want anyone else touching it, so I was satisfied we were doing everything right.

For the first few months, it was fine and I was happy with it.

But within about four months, it started sticking. You can’t get it properly clean-looking (if you follow the manufacturer’s instructions). I called the retailer about it and they just weren’t interested even thought the products supposedly have a “lifetime” guarantee. I also contacted the Scanpan distributor and they told me it must be my fault as their products were “100% guaranteed not to stick”. They also said no-one else had ever complained about them.

Well, they’re wrong on both counts.

Annoyed with their attitude, and upset that my much-longed for cooking utensils hadn’t lived up to expectations, I did some basic online research and found that I wasn’t alone! While there are many reviews out there from people who are happy, there are others who have had exactly the same issue as me – good in the beginning, then they ‘go’ very quickly and there is no back-up service from the manufacturer.

My advice would be that the saucepans are fine, but the frypan isn't worth it. As so many brands bundle their cookware sets, something else may offer better value.

Overall

2.5 stars because the saucepans are a good pass and the frypan is definitely a fail.
