When I first saw the claims on the outside of the box for this Solemate Mini, I was sceptical to say the least.
Portable wireless speaker that combines amazing sound clarity with an ultra-portable design.
‘Sure,’ I thought.
But I gave it a go – not because I was asked to but because my grandkids gave it to me for Christmas and it seemed both polite and expected to do so.
I know there are many Bluetooth portable speakers on the market and I haven’t previously had one but can I say … I’m hooked? This Solemate Mini is fantastic.
It doesn’t matter where I am, I can take what I want to listen to with me.
This Solemate Mini is about 13cm in length, 5.5cm high, 6cm in depth and weighs almost nothing. In fact, the box says it weighs 295 grams - and that’s not much. It is built from very durable materials which suggests even if you drop it from a great height – which I can do at times – it won’t shatter or crack as my iPad has done (and it was only chair height when I dropped it by the way).
It’s very easy to connect. I didn’t even really need to follow the instructions, as it’s just intuitive, let alone ask my grandchildren to do it for me!
The best part is the sound quality with its two speakers. Their claims are not overrated. I have so far tested it doing the gardening, doing grandchild-minding duties at the pool, as a phone speaker and I have it playing while I am writing this review. It also has functions to help you answer or reject calls or to redial the last number.
If anything, my one criticism might be that the ‘quiet’ volume isn’t really that low. This has not yet been a problem for me but it could be in some circumstances.
The literature says the Solemate Mini is childproof because of its durable design – and I believe that. The base is corrugated so it can't bounce, and it is splash and dust reistant. It says it has up to 8 hours music or talk time which I can also confirm. I received it on Christmas Day, connected it immediately and have played several hours a day and have only just recharged it today. There is also an audio jack and it can be recharged via a USB port with your phone charger or computer.
It’s not that pretty to look at although it comes in red, teal and yellow as well as black. My grandkids gave me the yellow, which is very bright and happy. They won’t say how much they (or their parents) paid for it but the recommended retail price is $99. If that’s so, it’s well and truly worth it.
Overall, this is a lovely little product that is user-friendly, light, compact, durable and delivers what it promises.
Four stars.
