The sale to stop a nation:Australia's retailers get together for a national online shopping day - 'Click Frenzy'.
Date: October 15 2012
The annual shopping bonanza day is set to come earlier this year when national retailers around Australia are set to “slash” prices for 24 hours.
‘Click Frenzy’ Day is Tuesday 20 November – just in time for Christmas shopping with retailers looking for a boost to sluggish performance this year.
''We're likening it to the Boxing Day sales on digital steroids,'' said Grant Arnott of Power Retail, an industry resource for online and multichannel retailers.
‘Click Frenzy’ Day is modelled on a similar day in the United States known as ‘Cyber Monday’ which was introduced six years ago. It offers online sales from more than 700 retailers with its 10 million shoppers spending $US1.25 billion during the 24 hours in 2011. Held on the Monday after Thanksgiving, ‘Cyber Monday’ has become the biggest day for online sales in the US and this year will be held on Monday 26th November.
With ‘Click Frenzy’ to occur one week earlier, Australia’s retailers are hoping it will deliver a similar result.
Mr Arnott expects up to 200 retailers to take part in the event at clickfrenzy.com.au and hope that roughly 1 million shoppers will take part.
Power Retail will announce participating retailers in the coming weeks. They are expected to include ''some very prominent retail names'' across fashion, beauty, electronics, outdoor, furniture and department stores. It is unclear whether international retailers will also participate in the Australian event.
The executive director of the National Retail Association, Trevor Evans, welcomed the concept but said he hoped international retailers are not part of ‘Click Frenzy’.
''I think Australian retailers will welcome the opportunity … but what concerns me is that they could lose out to foreign competitors because they can't compete when they have to pay GST and customs,'' Mr Evans said.
Mr Arnott says that because the Australian version is happening before the US version, it gives Australian stores “a jump” on its international rivals.
