Are you reading this in a room where there’s at least four other people? According to data presented by Bravehearts, the chances are that at least one out of the five has been subject to sexual assault before 18 years of age. That’s 59,000 children a year.
Bravehearts’ 1 in 5 campaign aims to halve that figure – or even better - by 2020 through research into what they call the ‘three piers to prevention’ – education, empowerment and protection.
“We want to make Australia the safest place in the world to raise a child,” a Bravehearts spokesperson says.
To support Bravehearts with conducting the research, they have partnered with the Dollar Cosmetic Club to offer shoppers an opportunity to stock-up on big name cosmetic brands for just $1. Every day until the end of the month, the Dollar Cosmetic Club will offer a different cosmetic deal for just $1 with the money donated directly to Bravehearts, giving shoppers the opportunity not only to support the education and protection of Australian kids, but also stock up and save on their favourite cosmetic brands including Elizabeth Arden, Revlon and Maybelline.
Bravehearts Founder and Executive Director Hetty Johnston said it will help Bravehearts achieve its goal.
“This is a brilliant way to raise awareness around the issue of child sexual assault and we applaud Dollar Cosmetic Club for helping us to raise much needed funds so that we can better educate, empower and protect Australian children from this abhorrent crime,” she said.
Bravehearts is also encouraging people to show support for their important work by being part of the 1 in 5 digital campaign. Simply take a ‘selfie’ showing the 1 in 5 gesture, upload it to Twitter and Facebook and share it with your friends to raise awareness and funds for Bravehearts.
