NSW car buyers have a new tool to help them avoid choosing a "lemon", with the government creating a free app.
Fair Trading Minister Anthony Roberts launched My Next Car yesterday.
"When buying a car, everyone worries they've picked a lemon," he said.
"But this new app helps you do your research and alerts you to any potential issues with the vehicle."
The app is designed to help car buyers make informed decisions, by allowing users to record the details of cars they like, use an inspection check list, compare cars side-by-side, order a debt check on the vehicle, or calculate loan repayments.
Users can also access a national database for a small fee to check whether there is any money owing on the vehicle.
"The last thing anyone wants when they buy a car is for a loan company to turn up and repossess it, because the previous owner failed to pay off their loan," Mr Roberts said.
My Next Car is the third in a line of free car-related applications developed by Fair Trading.
It is available for iPhones and will be available for Android users later in November.
Those who do not own a smartphone can also read Fair Trading advice on car buyers on its website.
