We’ve written about Tasmania before on Motherpedia. We’re great fans – as is Lonely Planet who reckons Hobart is one of the top 10 places in the world to visit in 2013.
The centre of Hobart is historic Salamanca Place and it’s the best place to start exploring Hobart especially with The Taste Festival in full swing from 28th December to 3rd January. Even without The Taste Festival, Tasmania has some of the best quality, affordable food and wine on offer – and all within easy reach. From north to south, it’s a 3-4 hour comfortable drive and there’s not one part of the island which will disappoint you.
Here are a few of the activities and events on offer in Tassie this holiday season.
The Taste Festival Hobart – New Year’s Eve Party
One of the most sought-after events on the Tasmanian calendar, the 2012 NYE @ The Taste celebration is set to be one wonderful waterfront party, featuring the Bakers Dozen – a 13 piece bag band show featuring some of Tasmania’s best musicians playing a mix of old, new and original songs. Local bands The Robinsons, The River’s Skin and Baked On will bring a little soul to the night. The highlight of the night – the fireworks – will see the skies of Hobart awash with colour and light during the family fireworks display at 9.30pm, with another spectacular display at midnight for the grown-ups to welcome in 2012 with Tasmanian bubbles. General entry which includes seating is $50 for an adult. Tickets sell like hot cakes, so now’s the time to secure your seat at the hottest party in town here.
Seahorse World and Platypus World – Beauty Point – North Tasmania
Seahorse World in northern Tasmania offers fun-filled, educational guided tours for all ages.
Seahorse World is the world’s first commercial seahorse farm and supplies live seahorses and other ornamental fish internationally to public aquariums and pet wholesalers. Discover a working seahorse farm, how aquaculture has made these creatures available to everyone. A personalised and friendly, 45-minute guided tour, will also reveal the many distinctive characteristics of seahorses.
East Coast Natureworld – Bicheno
East Coast Natureworld is set amongst 150 acres of natural parkland and lagoons. Operating for more than 30 years, Natureworld offers a more intimate, interactive, and ultimately enjoyable experience with Tasmanian wildlife. Originally a birdlife park, Natureworld has evolved into a nature world, where Tasmanian wildlife, birdlife and flora can be seen and appreciated by all. With 150 acres of forest, lagoon and beach frontage the extensive park grounds allow you to wander around at your own leisure
Cradle Mountain - North West Coast
The Devils @ Cradle Tasmanian Devil Sanctuary is unique in that it focuses on Tasmania's three carnivorous marsupials, concentrating primarily on the Tasmanian devil but including both the eastern and spotted tail quoll. Fantastic place for the nature lover.
Port Arthur
Discover convict history, explore coastal scenery at nearby Remarkable Cave and Crescent Bay and wander through the ruins at the Coal Mines Historic Site, north west of the village of Port Arthur.
Richmond
Richmond is a wonderful historic town just 25 kilometres from Hobart. Its most famous attraction is Australia’s oldest bridge, built from sandstone – and entirely from convict labour. But there’s lots more to explore around the town for half a day and some wonderful places to eat.
