When I finished up work for maternity leave, I thought I would have all the time in the world. When I thought of what I achieved in a working day, I thought it was reasonable to transpose that productivity into my new life.
-
swap coffee catch ups for walking/exercising catch ups;
-
meet other mothers at the pool or gym and take turns in looking after each other’s babies to get some exercise in; this also means you don’t have to spend money on childcare while you exercise and you can always be with your baby (of course, there are some great classes out there that include childcare in them and I know people who have sworn by these classes)
-
exercise early in the day to avoid other errands or problems getting in the way; the day can quickly unravel and exercise is usually the thing that gets dropped from the to do list, if it’s out of the way early, then you’ve done something for yourself;
-
find a local yoga or pilates class for mums and bubs, or start one with some friends
-
develop a circuit to do while your baby sleeps, it doesn’t have to be sophisticated or technical, sit ups, pushups and squats are all great ways to get your muscle tone back after having a bub;
-
if you can’t fit in a long walk, do two shorter walks; my little one is much happier child at that horrible late afternoon phase if she’s out about in the baby carrier or pram watching other people, come to think of it, so am I!
