When it comes to preparing school lunches for children, wraps are often considered a healthy choice. However, a new report by the University of Newcastle shows that some 'healthy' wraps are actually hiding large amounts of salt and contain artificial preservatives.
In the study, it was found out that one serving of some wraps contained six times as much salt as others. For instance, based on an average daily intake of 1.5 wraps of the leading wrap product in the market, you'll be adding 90 teaspoons of salt to your child's diet every year!
Imagine this: Mission Wraps Original, the leading wrap product in Australia, sold 2,500 tonnes of wraps in the last twelve months, contributing to 8 million teaspons or 329 bath tubs of salt to the Australian food supply during that period. One serving of the highest salt wraps on the market (average sodium level 561mg) contributes to over one third the amount of sodium in the Australian Suggested Dietary Target for chronic disease prevention, which is 1,600mg of sodium of 4g of salt per day.
If that doesn't make you check the label, know that 17 of 22 wraps in the report by the University of Newcastle were found to contain artificial preservatives.
It truly is shocking!
But, it should be noted that not all wraps are bad. Three brands, including Mountain Bread, Helga's, and Wattle Valley were all found to contain less than 500mg of salt per serving (100g). The lesson here? Check the label to ensure that what you are feeding your family is truly healthy.
