My apologies in advance to all the shift workers for me loving Fridays. Having spent much of my student and adult life as a shift work and, in particular, a night shift worker, I used to get so annoyed when I read things like ‘TGIF’ and hearing the radio stations on a Friday getting everyone pumped up for the start of the weekend. For me it used to be the start of my week and nothing to do with enjoying myself. That said, I think it is why I now love this day so much ... and that is a long way of saying 'Fizzy Friday' is my favourite day of the week.
Fizzy Friday is named after the sparkling wine ritual that has started to emerge around 5pm on a Friday afternoon. This often involves a few other champagne-loving good friends where we gather at sunset to debrief and recap the week that was and look forward to the week ahead.
I tried Jen Pfeiffer’s sparkling ‘The Rebel’ bubbles after I won it via Motherpedia.
When my box of bubble heaven arrived, I loaded up a bottle in the fridge to chill and test it out before Christmas Day. The sun was setting on a warm Perth evening, perfect timing to try these new bubbles.
I looked closely at the glistening bottle, enjoying the artwork with the ‘ rock it like a redhead’ mantra printed on the label. Already, it was a fun wine from the outside.
I popped the cork and took my first sip. I was instantly delighted with the lightness of the bubbles, washed down with the dry crispness of the wine that swirled around those little bubbles of fun. My second and third sips were as gratifying as the first and I was loving the Jen Pfeiffer sparkling. I decided then and there that this would be the sparkling wine to welcome my Christmas Day guests and accompany the prawns and crayfish starter. I was not disappointed with my choice and enjoyed the mix of exquisite wine and so did my guests.
But the biggest test was yet to come. Now that the excitement and frivolity of Christmas had been and gone, would I still enjoy my new find as much with my Fizzy Friday friends?
I explained how I acquired the sparkling wine that we were about to trial and did not hint at my previous positive tastings. We poured the precious fluid into crystal glasses and held them up to the beautiful sunset light - on a Friday of course.
We admired the pale, straw liquid with light, small bubbles dancing around in the delicious grape nectar. With our customary salute of ‘Happy Friday’ we clinked glasses, looked each friend in the eye and raised the glasses to our parched lips. I watched my sceptical friends and waited for their response. They were as pleasantly surprised as I had been; then we all settled in to enjoy the rest of our weekly treat with our favourite cheeses and lively conversation.
We deemed Jen Pfeiffer’s Rebel bubbles worthy of toasting our children and farewelling a stressful year – a huge recommendation in itself.
If you enjoy a dry, crisp and honest sparkling wine, then I wholeheartedly encourage you to seek out this Jen Pfeiffer fun syrup and give it a go. While I am savouring my last few bottles, I will definitely be buying more as a lovely accompaniment to my favourite day.
Make sure you enjoy your next bubbles occasion with a bottle of Jen Pfeiffer's Rebel bubbles. At just $14/bottle or even less via Naked Wines, this is great value.
Five stars.
