Perhaps the biggest challenge of decorating your kid’s bedroom is how rapidly they outgrow styles, trends, and interests. Whether you’re decorating from scratch, or performing a makeover, you need to consider the ‘shelf life’ of your ideas, and be prepared to switch things up as your child matures. This way, you’ll save a heap of time, money, and frustration in the long-term.

To help make your child’s bedroom more stylish, practical, and comfortable – without breaking the bank –, follow these useful design tips:

Painting – Do’s and Don’ts

Painting is a laborious task. How so? Well, you have to clear out all the furniture, touch up the wall surfaces, do the actual painting, and – unless you use a low-VOC paint – endure days of that lingering odour. For these reasons, you want to choose a paint colour that looks great now yet will also stand the test of time.

Try to avoid overly bright, age-specific colours like baby blue, hot pink, and golden yellow. Why? Because your kids will outgrow them fast. And, studies have shown that exposing children to overly bright rooms can make them feel overstimulated and result in anxiety and restless nights – both for you, and the child.

Instead, opt for more subtle and sophisticated variations of classic colours. Baby blue? Forget it. Go for a darker, richer shade of blue. Bright pink? No thanks. Settle for a lighter shade of purple like lilac. And, instead of plain old white, try a unique alternative like eggshell or beige for some added warmth.

Health and Safety First

Whatever the style and theme of your child’s bedroom, always make safety priority number one.

The easiest way to do this is to anticipate the kind of risks your child may face. Are electrical cables and outlets within hands reach? Tuck away the cables and purchase outlet covers. Does the bunk bed have a safety ladder for easy access and guard rails on top to prevent falls? If not, replace it. Are all desks, bedside tables, and cabinets free of sharp edges and corners? Again, if not, replace them.

More importantly, no matter how ‘outlandish’ your child’s bedroom design is, keep in mind your child’s personal health and development. Make sure their mattress is comfortable yet sturdy enough to support their posture. And, if your child is prone to allergens, considering investing in an allergen-free mattress, quality mattress protectors, and pillow covers.

Nurture Their Interests

Your children will most likely have a passion. Or, at the very least, a certain topic or style that appeals to them. It could be space, a favourite cartoon show, a beloved video game franchise, or any number of things. Regardless, be sure to get your child involved in the decorating process and let them tell you what they like.

Take your child to a few stores. Browse the internet with them. Or scroll through a few catalogues together. Take note of what your child does, and doesn’t like, and follow through on their interests to the best of your ability. This way, you’re bound to end up with a room both you and your child love.

One word of caution though: don’t invest too much in short-lived fads. For instance, if your kid loves Fortnite, but you know their obsession won’t last, don’t devote their entire bedroom to that one franchise alone. Otherwise, once they get bored of it, you’ll have to replace everything all at once.
