“Design can change how you feel about yourself and your home,” according to interior designer, Karen Mills.
“If you don’t feel right in your home, you won’t want to be there long.”
She says if that’s how you’re feeling, it’s time to make a change.
“By that, I don’t mean change house!” she says. "You can change the way you feel about your house by introducing some new concepts, changing furniture or furnishings, adding some colour or just rearranging things.
“When I’m working with clients one of my favourites places to start is with finishes.”
Karen says there are three top trends in finishes in 2013.
1. Texture
“Textures abound everywhere from handmade wallpapers and flooring to benchtops and fireplaces. And I’m loving it because texture creates contrast and interest without having to introduce a busy pattern into an otherwise calming interior.” Karen says that texture can really show off a little personality or creativity.
2. Planet Earth
From designs that resemble the wavy patterns of the ocean waves to the textural beauty of reclaimed wood or design of an animal print, Karen says that textures that resemble nature still dominate throughout designed interiors.
3. Simplistic Luxury
Remember when luxury was all things gold and often garish? Times have changed, says Karen. “The new luxury tells a tale of simplistic elegance with soft champagne finishes, ever so slightly tarnished silvers, and other tastefully reflective surfaces that glimmer instead of glare, along with fabulous fabrics and more rustic elements to create that perfect mix of tasteful but casual elegance.”
