Getting you first home is an amazing feeling, but it can also be filled with dread over how safe your new home and neighbourhood actually are. With that said, there are a wide array of things you can do to bolster your home’s domestic defences. Today, we’ll be looking at a few things you can do to ensure a secure home, and a little extra peace of mind for you and your household.
Safety screens and doors
We've all been there. It's a hot, stuffy night and you want to leave the front door open to get a breeze going. However, that's just an invitation for crooks to come on in and help themselves to all your things. So, what do you do? You get security screens or doors. However, while they do provide a level of protection, with enough time and the right equipment, security doors are still penetrable.
Then, there's the installation. If it's being attached to a weak door frame or it's allowing enough space to get good jimmying leverage, effectiveness is obviously reduced. Getting high-end security doors and having them professionally installed will minimize this risk dramatically.
Deadbolt locks
Though they are more expensive than spring latch locks, deadbolt locks are much stronger and provide more protection to your home. You should add at least one-inch thick deadbolt locks to all front and back doors into your home. When installing deadbolt locks, ensure that there’s little or no space between the doors and their frames, as this spaces make it easy for intruders to force the door apart. To reduce the space, use plywood or metal sheets to reinforce the door.
Get a guard dog
Many people use guard dogs to watch over and protect their homes. Guard dogs need extensive training and socialization to make them hostile towards strangers and friendly towards their owners and other familiar faces. Many dog breeds can make excellent guards such as the German Shepherd, the Bullmastiff, the Caucasian Shepherd, the Rottweiler, the American Staffordshire terrier, the Airedale terrier, the Doberman pinscher, and the Giant Schnauzer.
If you are considering getting a guard dog, go for one of the mentioned breeds. However, if you already have one, all you need to do is consult a guard dog training expert to help you train it.
Alarm and security systems
Having an alarm is one if the best measures for protecting your home. They blare out a loud sound to alert you of any potential dangers and to scare burglars away. An alarm system, even when silent, can keep intruders away, as the shear sight of it can deter intruders from making further attempts.
A home surveillance system that comprises both visible and hidden security cameras is another excellent security measure. Visible cameras indirectly warn intruders that you are watching every move they make, but the hidden ones are best for recording burglary footage, as the intruder doesn’t realise that they’re there. They’re also a great backup in cases when the visible cameras are disabled.
Hide all wiring
One of the first things burglars will do is find any wires hanging on the outside of your home and disconnect them in order to disable all security devices. Therefore, hiding your home security wires is a smart move to prevent this.
Additionally, if you have an outside fuse box, make sure it's hidden and locked, as burglars can turn off the power to your home. This then makes it easier to any steal electronics as there is no risk or electrical backfire and also make it harder for you to do anything about it if your security system has been disabled.
