A family-owned Australian winery has beaten the world’s best to take out one of the most respected wine competitions.
Taylor Wines 2010 St Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded the Warren Winiarski Trophy for Cabernet Sauvignon at the London Internatinal Wine and Spirits Competition.
This is the second time in under a decade that the winery from Clare Valley in South Australia has won this prestigious trophy, winning in 2005 for its 2001 St Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon.
Taylors Wines third generation Managing Director, Mitchell Taylor will be heading to London to collect the trophy at the International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) gala dinner in November.
“To receive this trophy for our flagship wine is such an honour for my family and our ‘extended family’ the Taylors Wines team,” Mitchell said.
“We could only have dreamed to receive this trophy for a second time and both times for the St Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon makes it all the more exciting.”
Taylors Wines was established in 1969 by Mitchell’s grandfather, Bill Taylor Snr, who had the vision to create some of Australia’s best cabernet sauvignon in the Clare Valley.
Bill had had a love affair with famous French clarets such as Chateau Mouton Rothschild from Bordeaux, and these wines have inspired the winemaking craftsmanship at Taylors for more than 40 years.
The 2010 St Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon has already won the Best Clare Valley Wine Producer Trophy and Gold at the China Wine & Spirits Awards, as well as Gold at The New Zealand International Wine Show.
The wine will hit the shelves in mid-2014, and follows in the footsteps of the six times gold-medal-winning 2009 St Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon.
The 2010 vintage provided excellent growing conditions in the Clare Valley, with heavy winter rainfall providing the perfect soil conditions for spring and summer growth. The summer was hot and dry with cool nights removing the risk of disease and allowing fruit to ripen perfectly.
Now in its 44th year, the IWSC is the longest running and most respected competition of its kind in the world.
It’s been a great month to date for Australian wine industry on the international stage with six Australian wine companies also taking awards at the Decanter World Wine Awards.
