We put time, effort and money into decorating every room of our homes but one area which we often neglect is the backyard.

Plenty of time is spent in the backyard, whether it be hosting barbecues, kicking or throwing a ball around or just relaxing out in the sun. So why don’t we treat them as importantly as the rooms inside?

If your reasoning is because there simply aren’t any interesting ways to spruce up the backyard with homemade creativity, art or generally quirky decorations then we’ve got news for you – there are.

Here are six ideas which can decorate your backyard.

Create a small outdoor living room

Take your living room outdoors for the summer months. An area as small as a little patio in the corner of your backyard can be turned into a living room – just get some chairs and cushions out there, a little table and some outdoor string lights and you are sorted. For those who want to go even further, install a patio heater so you can stay out there even on the chillier evenings and a television to watch glorious HD in the glorious sunshine.

Use blocks to create a small table of bar

You know what your backyard needs? A table or bar. You can build one quite easily with a handful of breeze blocks or Besser blocks topped with a plank of wood. Not only does it provide a welcome surface for you to put food and drinks on, but the holes in Besser blocks can also be used to plant flowers in, brightening the backyard up at the same time.

Get hold of some ornaments

No backyard is complete unless you have some ornaments out there. Whether you go Australian with a stone kangaroo or koala, British with one of those little gnomes and his fishing rod or a replica of Mayan Artifacts Found In Mexico, several well placed ornaments add character and a sense of fun.

Turn a wooden pallet into a flower display

If you’ve got a set of green fingers and love planting, then what better way to display all your flowers than with a wooden pallet? They are cheap – often free, in fact – and with a lick of paint can be looking fresh in less than a couple of hours. Turn the pallet on it’s side and it will take up hardly any space and the potted flowers you place on each shelf can be changed to reflect the seasons.

Stick mirrors on your fence or walls

You can’t make your backyard larger, but you can certainly change the illusion around its size. Mirrors can make objects and areas appear larger than they are . A few strategically placed vintage mirrors hung on a wall or fence will reflect the greenery of your backyard as well as providing plenty of amusement for kids and guests when they come over.

Create a miniature herb garden with mason jars

Take a piece of wood, attach some mason jars to it, plant some herbs in the jars and then put this brand-new miniature herb garden into your backyard, either attaching it to a wall or sticking it in the ground. When the herbs come through, you can then move the herb garden into the kitchen and hang it on a wall inside, leaving you with a selection of convenient homegrown herbs and spices to throw into your cooking pot whenever you see fit.
