When you live alone, you can survive without a first-aid kit. As an adult, you can take care of yourself, and in case of domestic accident, improvisation works. With kids, however, it’s a whole different story. Kids will hit, fall and get scratches. Not because they want, but because it’s part of being a kid. So, if you want to restrain the screams (there will be screams) and take proper care of your children, here’s a list of basics that your first-aid kit must have.
1. Sterilized gauze pads. Essential for cleaning (and keeping clean) the scratches and cuts that come with all that playing and running around.
2. Adhesive bandages. You’ll use this for everything. The overlooked advantage of adhesive bandages is the psychological effect: your kid will feel better after a band-aid, guaranteed.
3. Great for wound cleaning; you’ll be thanking the wipes’ balmy effect when your child stops screaming after a minor scratch.
4. Sharp scissors. You don’t want to find yourself in a teeth-only situation when using gauze or tape. Sewing scissors will do, but remember to keep them within the first-aid kit.
5. Thermometer. You can’t live without a working one. The one below is a forehead thermometer, but any will do.
6. It might sound elemental, but treating a wound with bare hands significantly increases the risk of infection. Non latex gloves are inexpensive and necessary.
7. Soap. Yes, I know you probably have more than one in your house, but remember to have a new, unused soap bar in your kit. Hypoallergenic if possible, but any will do - as long as it wasn’t used by anyone else before.
8. This one’s important, and many forget about it. The emergency contact list will save precious minutes in case of an emergency.
9. Like soap, we all have blankets. However, it’s important to keep them at hand reach. Trust me, you don’t want to search through wardrobes looking for a proper blanket when you actually need one.
10. Adhesive tape . Your child will be running around again in no time after an incident - way before scratches or cuts are healed. Keeps everything together and that’s what we want. Remember to get the waterproof ones if available!
