Are you someone who is looking to storm into the fashion industry?

Are you straight out of university or just someone who wants a switch of career? For those who are passionate about becoming a fashion stylist, this article is for you. Whether you are trying to take your designs to the next level or are simply trying to land a new job, a strong fashion stylist portfolio is pivotal when it comes to entering the fashion industry. Below we will look at ways in which you can create a strong fashion stylist portfolio and blow your competition out of the water, so read on to find out more!

1. First Of All, You Need To Know It All

Before you even get started on building your stylist portfolio, you will want to ensure that you are fully in the loop with regards to fashion trends and what is going on in the industry at this current moment. If you graduated from Fashion School 10 years ago, it may be time to hone your skills by enrolling yourself in personal stylist courses. Freshening your knowledge and skills is key, and is something you should be doing every few years in your career anyway. Remember, continuous learning is key, and it is no different in the world of fashion.

2. Do Your Research

If you are going to be using your portfolio for specific requirements, whether that be applying to a fashion school or for a fashion stylist job, you need to fully understand the portfolio requirements. All schools and jobs have different portfolio requirements, so do take the time to read them and follow them.

Don’t use the exact same portfolio to apply to 4 different job ads - this is a big no no. If you have extra skills that may not fit a company’s requirements, remember to file those separately and always have them on hand in case you would like to present it to your interviewer. As they say, you can never be too prepared!

3. Don’t Skimp On Quality

No one is going to be impressed by a flimsy, low quality binder that you have used as a “fashion portfolio”. This is why it is so crucial that you invest in a high quality, sturdy and good looking portfolio. First impressions count, so you’ll want to impress your potential employers before they even open your portfolio. Expect to spend well up to hundreds of dollars for a good portfolio and sleeves, but count this as an investment. Do not neglect to have a good looking digital copy of your portfolio as well, since we live in a digital age.

4. Keep Things Professional

You may be tempted to include iPhone photos that you have taken of your creations in your portfolio, but we strongly suggest to avoid doing so. Unless your photos are taken professionally, you’ll want to leave any Instagram shots out of your portfolio. Not only should your photos be taken professionally - you should enlist the help of professional models to be the center of attention in your shots as well. An impressive portfolio is one that looks totally professional, not one that is littered with photos of your best friend.

5. Make Sure Everything Flows

Last but not least, now that you have your content, photos and everything you need, you want to put your portfolio together and make sure everything flows well. A rule of thumb is to start off with your strongest look, and save your second-strongest for last. This ensures that your best stays memorable. Try to create a flow and story throughout your portfolio as much as possible as well.

Follow these handy tips on creating a strong fashion stylist portfolio and you’ll start impressing anyone who comes your way! With a little smarts and know-how, you’ll be the next talk of the town in fashion world.
