It’s 200 years since Jane Austen published Pride and Prejudice and this year’s Jane Austen Festival in Canberra is gearing up for the weekend celebration starting on Thursday.
The Festival is an annual event to celebrate everything ‘Regency’ from the Austen and Napoleonic eras. It includes dancing, music, food, games, archery, fencing, theatre, promenades, grand balls, talks, workshops, costumes and books. The Jane Austen Festival is part of the larger ACT Heritage Festival held ever year about this time when autumnal Canberra is at its best.
Jane Austen visited Australia in around 1803-04 but the visit passed unnoticed. Her first novel, Sense and Sensibility, was not published until 1811 and Pride and Prejudice two years later.
The Jane Austen Festival runs from 18th-21st April. Tickets are available online.
P.S. Colin Firth will not be there!
