For the third year in a row, William has topped the NSW Registry of Births Deaths & Marriages list of most popular names for baby boy and Ruby is the number one name for baby girls.
William has held the top spot since 2009, with new number one Ruby pushing last year’s winner Chloe, back to fourth place.
William has remained popular across the last century, taking a dip in the 1970s but has since become strong again. Ruby was less common last century but has been gaining popularity since the 1980s.
“Popularity in names does come and go over the decades. In 1912, just over 200 baby girls were given the name Ruby. 100 years on, just over 500 parents decided on the name,” said Greg Curry, Registrar, NSW Registry of Births Deaths & Marriages.
“Naming a new baby is certainly an exciting time for parents. The name may come from the Top 10 list or may be unique,” said Mr Curry.
