Kidsafe, the Child Accident Prevention Foundation of Australia, is targeting a reduction in the 250 child deaths and 58,000 hospital admissions seen every year in Australia due to preventable injuries, with the release of a home safety checklist today.
The number of children who present to hospital emergency departments each year due to unintentional injury is unacceptably high.
The Victorian Minister for Housing and Children, Wendy Lovell, said that in Victoria alone 29 children die, 13144 are admitted to hospital and 66644 present to an emergency department with the majority of the injuries occurring in or around the home.
Ms Lovell also launched a Home Safety Checklist which lists 80 points for parents and caregivers to check for optimum safe conditions in the home environment.
“Child injury prevention around the home requires constant auditing of conditions,” said President of Kidsafe Victoria, Robert Caulfield.
“The Kidsafe Home Safety Checklist will assist parents to identify possible injury hazards in their homes, and if a hazard is seen it needs to be removed immediately.”
Mr Caulfield said that by downloading the Kidsafe Home Safety Checklist and assessing their homes, parents can help to reduce the risk of serious injury to their children.
